ZSFG Collaboration Award Recipient

This new award is an opportunity to celebrate the collaborative aspect of our work and recognize those who demonstrate a shared commitment to excellence in improving the health of patients and/or the community.

In May, the Division of Trauma Recovery Services' multidisciplinary Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) was recognized for exceptional interprofessional collaboration. This team is comprised of UCSF and Department of Public Health staff and faculty, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency room RNs, multiple masters' level mental health providers, clinical psychologists, an adult and child psychiatrist, a data analyst, and administrative support staff. Together, each employee and discipline plays a vital role in the response that survivors of acute sexual assault receive at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG).

Their collaborative efforts have made a profound difference in the lives of people of all backgrounds and stages of the lifespan, offering them hope, healing, and a pathway toward recovery. Their dedication to providing compassionate and comprehensive care sets a standard of excellence, a model now replicated in more than 50 centers across the country to support healing and resilience.

Spotlight on Interprofessional Collaboration Scholars

The IPCS Program is an opportunity for UCSF health professions students to engage in further interprofessional collaboration activities and scholarship, through small group work, simulation, projects, scholarship, and interprofessional clinical immersion experiences. Our IP Scholars may be able to provide some support to your work or participate in your activities to meet IPCS program requirements. If you are seeking a mentoring or coaching opportunity, please contact [email protected]. Thank you for directing any students who would be interested in joining the IPCS Program to the IPCS CLE website.

We are proud to highlight some of our current IPCS Scholars:

"Interprofessional collaboration is foundational to holistic patient-centered care, and I hope to embark on a career-long process of learning from my colleagues! My training has allowed me to engage with a variety of health professionals, including respiratory therapists, nurses at Highland Hospital, and the Interdisciplinary Opioid Stewardship committee in Contra Costa County. The insights from those experiences bolstered my learning and curiosity. The IPCS program recognizes my interest is rooted in patient-centered care and has connected me to clinicians in the physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic for my upcoming interprofessional clinical immersion rotation."

– Meredith Klashman, UC Berkeley-UCSF JMP medical student

"The method of thought ‘stay in your lane’ I experienced early on in my studies was nearly extinguished during my involvement with the IPE program at UCSF and the interprofessional collaboration endeavor of co-leading the UCSF Annual Donor Memorial. I learned that collaboration across health disciplines is integral to the successful treatment of our patients. During the IPCS Program, I have been able to explore and broaden the boundaries of interprofessional collaboration to ultimately push myself and my peers to be the most effective and holistic medical providers for our future patients. The leaders in the IPCS program have offered guidance and support for my final project, creating an interprofessional community health clinical module."

– Sophia Sears, UCSF physical therapy student

Apply for Interprofessional Clinical Opportunities Grant

Funding is available for your innovative interprofessional educational activity in a team-based care setting. The PIPE Interprofessional Clinical Opportunities Grant supports individual clinical sites to pilot new interprofessional immersive experiences for learners (students, residents and/or fellows) in the health professional programs at UCSF (dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy). Selected proposals will receive one-time funding of $10,000 to create and pilot a new interprofessional immersive experience.

Concept proposals are due October 14, 2024 and final proposals are due December 20, 2024. Questions can be directed to [email protected].

Upcoming Teaching Opportunities

Our Core Principles of Interprofessional Practice series begins in October and we invite you to help facilitate our small groups (of ~14 interprofessional learners from our five health professions at UCSF). The sessions are fun and it is a good chance to meet faculty from the other schools and to share your perspective with students on the importance of working in interprofessional teams to optimize patient care. First-time facilitators can be paired with an experienced facilitator if they so choose. There will be a just-in-time facilitator training prior to each session and a detailed facilitator guide. Our learners appreciate having practicing clinicians serve as their facilitators as they navigate the skills of working together as an interprofessional team.

Please use this sign-up link or QR code (above) to facilitate an IPE session. Contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
