Allergy/Immunology Elective: Funded by PIPE Clinical Opportunities Grant

Each year PIPE provides funding to support clinical sites to pilot new interprofessional immersive experiences for learners (students, residents and/or fellows) in the health professional programs at UCSF (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy). Grant recipients may receive up to $10,000 to support their clinical pilot. Learn more about PIPE grant funding.

This has been an incredible opportunity to learn from a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. Your work is a great example of interdisciplinary collaborative practice at its best! I am so lucky to be a learner here at UCSF!

A learner

in the Allergy/Immunology elective

This year the PIPE Clinical Opportunities Grant funded an interprofessional team of faculty (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing) to lead students in a newly created interprofessional Allergy/Immunology elective, which emphasized the understanding of the roles that clinical history, allergy testing, and desensitization play in the evaluation and management of common drug hypersensitivities. Each profession highlighted their unique roles in allergy care delivery, such as testing/desensitization protocols (medicine), medication compounding (pharmacy), and specialized preparation and administration techniques (nursing). The elective's goal was to incorporate allergy education into the undergraduate and graduate learning of pharmacists, advance practice providers, and non-allergy physicians who are the primary drivers of allergy assessments and documentation. The curriculum continues to incorporate feedback and tailor educational experiences to each learner’s profession while ensuring continued participation in interprofessional care.

The elective was led by the below dedicated faculty, trainees, and staff.

Upcoming Teaching Opportunities

We are launching our Core Principles of Interprofessional Practice series and invite those who would like to help facilitate our small groups (of 12 interprofessional learners from our 5 health professions at UCSF). The sessions are fun and it is a good chance to meet faculty from the other schools and to share your perspective with students on the importance of working in interprofessional teams to optimize patient care. First-time facilitators can be paired with an experienced facilitator if they wish to be. We will have just-in-time facilitator training prior to each session and a detailed facilitator guide. Our learners appreciate having practicing clinicians serve as their facilitators as they navigate the skills of working together as an interprofessional team.

Please use this Qualtrics link to sign up to facilitate an IPE session. Contact [email protected] if you have any questions.

Join Our Work

We have a few openings on our PIPE committees and would welcome new members who are interested in being more involved in the work of PIPE. Committee work is a great way to meet new colleagues and grow your skills as an educator. It also counts towards Campuswide Service. Committee work requires a modest time commitment (most committees meet monthly with limited work outside of committee meetings).

If you are interested in joining the work of PIPE by serving on one or more of these committees, please contact [email protected].
