First-year medical students are learning to include oral health in their traditional Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, and throat (HEENT) examination.  The new oral health module, screening exam, and fluoride varnish application skills were taught by senior dental students as part of the core curriculum for the School of Medicine's Foundations of Patient Care course during October.  Young children, older adults, and those without dental insurance are more likely to see their physician than dentist, underlining the need for integrating oral health patient-centered care.

The first session of the Core Principles of Interprofessional Practice curriculum, Interprofessional Collaboration: A Key Component to Safety Care was held on Monday, October 5. This year's opening session focused on the role of interprofessional collaboration in improving patient safety.  First year learners from Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Physical Therapy were assigned to a small group composed of 10-12 students from each of the programs and met in several lecture halls with the keynote speech broadcast from Cole Hall.
